Dog Vs Cats, from Idea to Itch in 12 hours

I’m excited to share my progress on a new project: Dog Vs Cats.

This little game started as just an idea and quickly turned into something playable in less than 12 hours!

Now that it’s live on Itch.io, my goal is simple: improving and learning.

Why Dog Vs Cats?

I wanted something straightforward but engaging, a quick-to-play concept focused on sound cues and simple mechanics. The idea of a dog defending its yard from invading cats felt both fun and achievable, making it perfect for a small, personal learning project.

How I Built It

I decided to use LÖVE2D (Lua) because it’s friendly for beginners, and also my Balatro inspiration helped me decide.
Using Windsurf’s Cascade copilot as well as the preview OpenAI GPT-4.1, making this was super fun and intuitive.

I managed to:

  • Download, create and implement basic sprites for the dog and cats.
  • Add sound effects (barks, meows, rustling sounds, music).
  • Create a simple enemy AI for the cats.
  • Implement a timer-based scoring system to add replayability.
  • Design a clean, retro-inspired familiar user interface.

Keeping things modular helped me stay organized and focused throughout the quick turnaround.

Making it public via Itch.io

Publishing to Itch.io was about putting something out there quickly, without overthinking or getting stuck in endless polishing. I wanted to share something raw and real, even if it’s a bit buggy or rough around the edges. My goal is transparency, showing my progress openly and committing to improving the game step-by-step, especially as I gather honest feedback from other gamers and developers.

What I’ve Learned So Far

  • Finishing something small feels great and is a powerful motivator.
  • Feedback from friends was priceless in spotting things I missed.
  • Start small and complicate later.
  • Iterate more ideas, fast.
  • Remain organised, with a future-proof code
  • Do not overthink.

What’s Next?

Right now, I’m focused on listening to feedback, polishing the game further, and enhancing gameplay. Then create a new idea, I already have a few in mind, let’s see what happens :)

Give the game a try, and share your thoughts — I’d truly appreciate it!

Thanks so much for reading and supporting this adventure. See you in the next update!

xx Raoni
